The excavation was carried out under the annual programme of the National Institution Museum of Kumanovo, funded by North Macedonia’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and led by the archaeologist Dejan Gjorgjievski.

Ground already known to be strange

Earlier seasons on the Lower Terrace had exposed rock-cut structures dating to the fourth century BC alongside stone constructions resembling tumuli. Beneath those, the team found numerous votive vessels, small pits, and a perirrhanterion, the stone water basin placed at the entrance to Greek sanctuaries so that those entering could purify themselves. That object alone was a strong signal, since a perirrhanterion is not domestic equipment. It marks a threshold between ordinary space and sacred space.

This season’s work followed that lead.

A goddess stamped into a storage jar

East of a previously identified tumulus, excavators uncovered the walls of a building filled with fragments of pithoi, the large ceramic jars used for bulk storage.

One pithos had its rim decorated with impressions made by a finger ring pressed repeatedly into the wet clay. The image shows a female deity, most probably Demeter, holding a cornucopia in one hand while pouring a libation from a kantharos over a tripod with the other. It is a complete sacrificial scene, reproduced over and over around the mouth of a storage vessel.

The dining room

South of the storage building, the team found part of a wall that appears to have separated the ritual area from the wider settlement. Beside it stood a small room, and this is where the season’s most revealing material came from.

The floor held a large quantity of animal bone, including wild boar and goat, together with a substantial assemblage of Hellenistic tableware. Most of the pottery was not local. The inventory includes West Slope guttus vessels and West Slope kantharoi, small black-glazed echinus bowls stamped with palmette motifs, amphora fragments, hydriai, oil lamps, and pieces of terracotta figurines. That range points to real participation in long-distance trade networks rather than a provincial community making do with what it had.

The room also produced a stone table base and fragments of an ornate dining couch. Among those fragments were a moulded foot and an appliqué showing a deity reclining on a kline, the ancient couch used for banqueting, holding a phiale, the shallow bowl used for pouring libations. Comparable decorative elements are known from the wealthy Hellenistic tombs at Pella and from the royal tombs at Aigai.

The room itself was modest in size despite the quality of what it contained. Two large triangular stones stood on its eastern side, and walls enclosed the space. The archaeologists interpret it as part of a temenos, the consecrated ground of a sanctuary, and most likely a setting for ceremonial dining. Their comparison is to the ritual dining rooms associated with the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Corinth, where small dining rooms lined the slopes and worshippers ate in the presence of the goddesses.

Wealth across the whole settlement

The ritual zone is not an isolated pocket of luxury. Earlier excavation on another part of the site examined a building with a peristyle courtyard, painted plaster walls, imported amphorae, and finely worked ceramics. Taken together, the material indicates strong connections to the cultural and economic networks of the Macedonian kingdom during the fourth and third centuries BC.

The open question

Future seasons will focus on examining the buildings found during this campaign in greater detail. The archaeologists also hope to establish whether a temple once stood in this part of Gradište.

That remains genuinely unresolved. What the season has produced is a consistent set of sanctuary components, a purification basin, a boundary wall, votive deposits, a dining room, and a deity stamped onto the storage jars. What it has not produced is the building those components would normally surround.

In the summer of 1997, hydrophone arrays originally built by the U.S. Navy to track Soviet submarines during the Cold War, and later repurposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to monitor undersea seismic and volcanic activity, picked up an extremely powerful, ultra-low-frequency sound. Researchers nicknamed it “the Bloop.” The signal was strong enough to register on sensors more than 5,000 kilometers apart, tracing back to a point in the South Pacific far from any known landmass.

A sound too loud for any known animal

When NOAA scientists first analyzed the recording, its amplitude appeared to far exceed anything produced by the loudest known animal, the blue whale, even after accounting for how sound travels through deep water. The sound’s rapid pitch fluctuation didn’t closely match any cataloged marine mammal call either. The gap between the evidence and a tidy answer was enough to draw wide public attention: news outlets speculated about an undiscovered sea creature, and some commentators noted the sound’s origin point was roughly near the fictional location of H.P. Lovecraft’s sunken city of R’lyeh, home to the monster Cthulhu, adding a layer of pop-culture myth to an already strange data point.

The iceberg explanation

By the mid-2000s, NOAA acousticians had collected years of additional recordings from the same hydrophone network and begun comparing the Bloop’s spectrogram against a growing library of known cryoseismic events. In 2005, researchers matched its signature to the kind of sound produced by large icequakes: the cracking and fracturing of enormous icebergs as they calve away from Antarctic ice shelves and grind against the seafloor or each other. Several similar, if less dramatic, signals recorded in the same years were traced to icebergs whose locations and timing were independently confirmed, effectively ruling out a biological or artificial source. Even after being explained, the Bloop remains one of the most widely cited examples of how an ordinary geophysical process can, at first glance, look inexplicable.

After World War I, the Australian government resettled thousands of veterans as farmers in Western Australia, promising subsidies that mostly failed to materialize before the Great Depression hit wheat prices hard. Compounding the farmers’ troubles, some 20,000 emus migrating inland after their breeding season descended on the wheat belt around Campion, trampling crops and tearing through fences as they went.

Sending in the artillery

Farmers petitioned the government for military assistance, and Defence Minister George Pearce agreed to deploy soldiers armed with two Lewis machine guns, framing it partly as useful marksmanship practice. Major G.P.W. Meredith led the operation, which began in early November 1932.

The results were immediately unimpressive. Emus proved fast, erratic, and hard to hit in open formation, scattering the moment gunfire started rather than bunching into an easy target. In one widely cited incident, a machine gun jammed after only a handful of birds were downed. Meredith later compared the emus’ ability to absorb hits and keep running to tanks.

A quiet withdrawal

After roughly a month and thousands of rounds fired, military estimates of confirmed emu kills ranged from the low hundreds to under a thousand, out of tens of thousands of birds in the area — a poor return that led to the operation’s quiet suspension. The “war” became a minor embarrassment in the Australian press and later a recurring piece of internet folklore, though farmers were subsequently granted ammunition and bounty schemes to handle the birds themselves, which proved considerably more effective.

The study, by John P. Cooper of the University of Exeter’s Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies with co-author K.D. Rajani, was published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society and runs to 66 pages of analysis.

Given to me by a pilot

The chart reached London through Alexander Burnes, a lieutenant in East India Company service and assistant to the British Resident in Kachchh, who obtained it from a sea captain and donated it to the Royal Geographical Society in 1835. Burnes gave it an English title describing it as a native Indian chart of the coast of Arabia and the Red Sea, drawn by an inhabitant of Cutch and used by pilots then working that navigation. His note on its acquisition is brief, that it was given to him by a pilot. The unnamed sailor who made it left no title of his own.

The manuscript itself, catalogued as mr Asia S.4, carries the chart on one side, while the reverse holds ten separate texts pasted on as backing to reinforce the paper. It is illustrated with ships and religious buildings, and it records more than 180 islands together with reefs, landmarks, and flags. Sixty-six place names are written in Devanagari, the script used for Sanskrit, Hindi, and other Indian languages.

Dating rests partly on how those letters are formed. The script retains the shirorekha, the horizontal line drawn above Devanagari characters, a feature Gujarati script had largely abandoned by the nineteenth century. Its survival here, in a document that is plainly a working tool rather than an official or elite production, points toward an eighteenth or very early nineteenth century origin, an inference supported by other archaic letterforms.

Overlooked five times

Scholars examined the chart in 1947, 1987, 2002, 2012, and 2022. Each time, the researchers note, its navigational function was largely passed over. Roughly half the Devanagari place names were left unidentified or unlocated, and more still lacked precise coordinates.

Cooper and Rajani set out to read it as what it was, a tool for finding one’s way at sea. They produced improved transcriptions of the Devanagari, identified and located all 66 toponyms, and interpreted the astronomical data written on the chart. With that information they were able to build a projection, plotting the chart’s contents spatially against Polaris altitudes and stellar bearings, which allowed the original information to be compared directly with modern geography for the first time.

The chart’s 29 rhumb lines turned out to serve three distinct functions, establishing the general trend of a coastline, indicating a direction of travel across open water, and, in at least two cases, marking safe passage into and out of harbor.

Latitude by starlight

The system underlying all of this predates instrument navigation in the region. Sailors determined latitude by observing the altitude of Polaris and other stars, and the chart records that stellar information alongside its place names and coastal detail. Together the two allowed a navigator to know both where he was and which way to steer, in some of the most demanding waters in the world.

Cooper is direct about the gap between how the chart looks and how it worked. Modern maps project space mathematically and to scale, he notes, which makes the world visually familiar in a very particular way. This chart does not do that, and by that standard appears inaccurate, yet it allowed seafarers with the right experience and knowledge of stellar navigation to work waters that were genuinely dangerous. All of it fitted into a portable scroll just 25 centimeters wide.

Other elements of the chart carried meaning too. Its stellar data gave latitude and course. Its place names and topography let a sailor fix his position. The religious buildings drawn on it suggest the navigator was Muslim. The flags, in Cooper’s reading, mark nodes of political and fiscal activity, the places where authority and money were concentrated along the route.

Not a map for strangers

An important qualification runs through the work. The chart was never meant for general use. Its information, however rich, would not have been enough to let anyone unfamiliar with regional seafaring traditions navigate safely.

For someone already initiated, it worked as a mnemonic, a handy reference that prompted and organized knowledge the sailor already carried. The scroll format supported that use directly, since it could be unrolled partially to show only the stretch of coast in question while the rest stayed wound away, easy to store and handle on a working ship.

That is the deeper point of the research. What survives on paper is a fragment of something largely intangible, a body of navigational knowledge held in the heads of sailors from Kachchh and Gujarat, sustaining trade between India, Arabia, and the Horn of Africa across the age of sail.

Katherine Parker, the Royal Geographical Society’s cartographic collections manager, framed the result as an argument for going back to material already in the archive. Re-examining collections is a continuing process, she said, one that lets researchers bring new methods and perspectives to objects and recover the meaning they held for the people who made them.

The animal has been named Carinasquama rusmithii, a new genus and species described from two pieces of amber recovered from the mid-Cretaceous deposits of Kachin State, Myanmar, dated to roughly 99 million years ago. The study, led by paleontologist Juan Daza of Sam Houston State University, was published in the Swiss Journal of Palaeontology.

Small enough to sit on a fingernail

The gecko itself was tiny, measuring between 1.6 and 2.2 centimeters from snout to vent, a size comparable to some of the smallest geckos alive today. It lived in the tropical forests that covered this region during the mid-Cretaceous, an environment whose resin trapped an extraordinary range of small animals and preserved them in three dimensions.

What survives of these two specimens is unusual in form. The bodies themselves have largely decayed away, leaving hollow voids inside the amber, but the outer covering endured in exceptional detail, individual scales, skin texture, and even the outline of the cloaca. To reconstruct what remained, the researchers scanned both specimens using micro-CT technology.

The bulge at the base of the tail

The find’s significance rests on one feature. On one of the two specimens, a swelling sits at the base of the tail, which Daza and colleagues interpret as a hemipenal bulge, the external sign of hemipenes, the paired copulatory organs carried by male squamates, the group comprising lizards and snakes. In living species, these organs sit retracted inside the base of the tail, producing a visible thickening in males.

The researchers laid out plainly why this matters. Paleontologists normally use skeletal features to determine the sex of fossil specimens, they noted, but incomplete remains make that difficult. Sexual dimorphism sometimes shows up as ornamentation, or can occasionally be teased out through statistical analysis of many specimens. Sex can also be inferred when eggs or embryos are found inside or alongside a specimen. Beyond that, sex-specific traits are rarely preserved at all. Hemipenal bulges are externally visible in living male squamates, but as the team put it, such structures typically leave no trace in rock fossils, though they may be preserved in amber.

That makes this specimen, in the authors’ own assessment, one of the oldest fossil lizards that can be unequivocally identified as male. The bulge also documents that hemipenes were already present in squamates by the mid-Cretaceous, though the researchers suspect the structures originated considerably earlier, probably alongside the group itself.

Where it fits on the family tree

Classifying the animal proved harder than sexing it. Carinasquama rusmithii shares a set of features with living gekkotans, including the absence of frontal and frontoparietal scales, small granular and uniform head scales, fused eyelids, body scales of relatively consistent size, and visible interstitial skin between the scales. Its precise position within the gecko family tree, however, remains unresolved, and the team has provisionally placed it within Pan-Gekkota, the broader group encompassing geckos and their close relatives.

A note on where the amber comes from

Fossils from Kachin amber carry a complication that has drawn sustained attention from the paleontological community. The deposits lie in a conflict-affected region of northern Myanmar, and the amber trade there has been linked to the financing of armed groups, prompting formal calls within the field, including from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, for researchers to exercise caution over specimen provenance and to avoid material extracted after the escalation of hostilities in 2017. The scientific value of these fossils is genuine and considerable, since amber preserves detail that rock almost never does, and this new gecko is a case in point. The circumstances of their extraction remain an open question the discipline continues to work through, and one worth keeping in view alongside the science itself.

The Voynich Manuscript is a roughly 240-page vellum codex, radiocarbon-dated to the early 15th century, written entirely in a script that matches no known language and has never been reliably deciphered. It takes its modern name from Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish-American book dealer who acquired it in 1912 from a Jesuit college in Italy.

What’s actually in it

The manuscript is organized into sections that scholars informally group as botanical, astronomical, biological, cosmological, pharmaceutical, and recipe-like content, based on the accompanying illustrations rather than any translated text. The botanical section shows plants that mostly don’t match known species. The biological section is dominated by small nude female figures bathing in interconnected pools and tubes, rendered in green-tinted water.

The script, now called Voynichese, uses a consistent alphabet of around 20–25 glyphs with unusual statistical properties: some “words” repeat with a regularity closer to a constructed system than natural language, and letter patterns show quirks not typically seen in genuine ciphertext or known languages of the period.

Hoax, cipher, or lost language

Proposed explanations range from an unrecorded natural language or a sophisticated polyalphabetic cipher, to an elaborate hoax created to defraud a wealthy buyer — a theory bolstered by the fact that the vellum itself predates Voynich’s ownership by roughly 500 years, ruling out him as the forger even if the content is meaningless. Multiple linguists, mathematicians, and amateur codebreakers, including World War II cryptanalysts, have published decoding claims over the past century; none has held up to peer scrutiny. The manuscript remains in Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book Library, fully digitized and publicly viewable, which has only increased the volume of attempted translations rather than settling the question.

Released in 1942, Casablanca is often hailed as Hollywood’s quintessential happy accident studio-system product that defied its chaotic production to become a cinematic masterpiece. At its core, the film succeeds because it perfectly balances a deeply personal romantic conflict with a monumental geopolitical crisis.

The Tension Between Romance and Cynicism

The film’s brilliance lies in its character arcs, particularly that of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart). Rick serves as a proxy for a pre-WWII America: fiercely isolationist, hiding behind a facade of cynical neutrality ("I stick my neck out for nobody"). The narrative masterfully uses his heartbreak over Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) not just as a romantic device, but as the emotional catalyst that forces him to choose between personal desire and a higher moral duty.

When Rick finally tells Ilsa that the problems of three little people "don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world," the film delivers its ultimate thesis: in the face of absolute evil, absolute neutrality is a moral failure.

Structural and Technical Precision

• The Pressure-Cooker Setting: Rick’s Cafe Americain functions as a brilliant microcosm of war-torn Europe. It is a purgatory packed with refugees, corrupt officials, and predators, where the physical geography of the room dictates the tension.

• The Score as Narrative: Max Steiner’s use of "As Time Goes By" is a masterclass in musical leitmotif. It transforms from a simple pop song into a haunting, omnipresent reminder of lost time, duty, and sacrifice.

• Sharp, Economical Dialogue: The screenplay (by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch) is astonishingly lean. It manages to deliver some of the most quoted lines in film history without ever feeling overly theatrical or stilted.

The Verdict: Casablanca works because it never lets its political propaganda overshadow its human elements. It remains a flawless study in bittersweet sacrifice, proving that the most enduring stories are those where love is grand, but honor is grander.

The discovery, announced by ESA on July 6, 2026, more than doubles the number of known quasars from this period and gives astronomers their first genuine survey of the era, rather than just its rare, brightest outliers.

The findings appear in a study titled “Euclid, Discovery of 31 New Quasars at 6.6 Less Than z Less Than 7.8,” published in Astronomy and Astrophysics and led by Daming Yang, a PhD candidate at Leiden University in the Netherlands, together with J.F. Hennawi, F. Guarneri, J. Wolf, S. Belladitta, and a wider international team.

Monsters at the dawn of time

A quasar is what happens when enormous quantities of gas and dust spiral into a galaxy’s central supermassive black hole, heated by extreme gravitational and frictional forces to millions of degrees and releasing more light than every star in the galaxy combined, sometimes outshining its host by a factor of hundreds or even thousands. For decades, astronomers have hunted for the very earliest examples of this phenomenon, since they offer a direct window onto how the first supermassive black holes and galaxies actually formed.

Quasars from this deep in cosmic history are notoriously hard to find. Few galaxies had yet had time to grow large enough to produce one, and the light that did escape them is faint, stretched deep into the infrared by the universe’s expansion, and easily mistaken for an ordinary, much closer star.

Two new record holders

Of the 31 quasars Euclid identified, 12 date to the universe’s first 770 million years. Two go further still, and now stand as the oldest and most distant quasars ever documented, formed within the universe’s first 670 million years, just 5 percent of its current age of 13.8 billion years. The record holder, designated EUCL J172902.75+641018.1, has a redshift of 7.77. The runner-up, EUCL J125308.55+705432.3, comes in at a redshift of 7.69. Both beat the previous distance record, set in 2021 at a redshift of 7.64, by a comfortable margin.

Euclid’s advantage lies in its instruments. The telescope carries VIS, a visible-light imager capable of capturing sharp, high-resolution images across huge swaths of sky, paired with NISP, a near-infrared spectrometer and photometer built specifically to catch light stretched into infrared wavelengths by cosmic expansion. That combination lets Euclid cover enormous areas of sky while still picking out the faint, reddish smudges these ancient quasars actually appear as. Of the 31 new discoveries, 21 have already been confirmed through follow-up observations at the Keck Observatory.

A galaxy already building something huge

One of the two record-breaking quasars, EUCL J125308.55+705432.3, has already drawn closer scrutiny. Silvia Belladitta of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and her colleagues pointed the Northern Extended Millimetre Array, a powerful radio telescope on France’s Plateau de Bure, at the quasar’s host galaxy, tracing two distinct kinds of submillimeter light, one from star-forming gas clouds, the other from cold dust. Together, the signals revealed a galaxy producing new stars at a rate exceeding 250 solar masses a year, some 250 times the Milky Way’s own star-formation rate, while holding roughly 10 billion solar masses of material, about a tenth of our own galaxy’s total heft.

Belladitta described the find as a galaxy with all the ingredients needed to build a genuinely giant system, one already as massive as the hosts of the brightest known early quasars, sitting atop a huge reservoir of molecular gas ready to fuel intense star formation. The result raises an intriguing possibility, that ultraviolet-faint quasars like this one may occupy a different evolutionary phase than their brighter cousins, either growing their central black hole more slowly, or hiding much of that growth behind thick clouds of dust, a distinction Belladitta says future observations will need to untangle.

A survey, not just a record

What distinguishes this discovery from earlier ancient-quasar finds is its scale. Antonio La Marca, a PhD candidate at the Netherlands Institute for Space Research and an ESA research fellow on the Euclid team, said the result more than doubles the number of known quasars from this ancient period, and represents the first true census of quasars at the dawn of the universe, a meaningful step toward understanding these objects on a more fundamental level.

Yang made a similar point about what Euclid changes methodologically. Before this mission, he said, astronomers could only find a handful of the very brightest ancient quasars. Euclid searches far more efficiently across huge areas of sky, letting researchers capture much fainter light and turning the telescope into a genuinely unique tool for quasar hunting. It took astronomers more than a decade to find the first ten or so quasars from this deepest slice of cosmic time. Euclid gathered more than three times that number in about a year of searching.

A mystery that only gets sharper

The discovery deepens a puzzle that has increasingly troubled astronomers. Each of the 31 newly found quasars is powered by a black hole weighing roughly a billion times the mass of the sun, an enormous amount of material to have accumulated when the universe itself was not yet a billion years old. Study co-author Joseph Hennawi called them monsters that somehow already existed when the universe was in its infancy, adding plainly that researchers still lack a good understanding of how they grew so massive, so fast.

These quasars date to what astronomers call the epoch of reionization, the transformative period when the first stars and galaxies converted the young universe from a cold, dark, and largely neutral state into the hot, ionized cosmos we see structured around us today. As Yang put it, quasars can be used as lighthouses to study the gas that lies between us and them, letting researchers trace exactly how that reionization played out across cosmic history.

Valeria Pettorino, ESA’s Euclid project scientist, framed the discovery’s appeal simply. Ancient quasars are rare, she said, and interesting in their own right, but they also function as genuine time machines, letting researchers explore the early universe directly and understand how the very first generation of galaxies came to exist.

The James Webb Space Telescope has already turned its own instruments toward these newly identified quasars, and researchers are now working through that additional data. With Euclid still only partway through its planned six-year survey of one-third of the entire sky, astronomers expect the mission to turn up still more distant quasars in the years ahead, gradually assembling what Hennawi calls a genuine chronicle of the universe’s first billion years.

In late January 1959, ten students and recent graduates from the Ural Polytechnic Institute set out on a ski-trekking expedition toward Gora Otorten, a mountain in the northern Urals. One member turned back early due to illness. The remaining nine, led by Igor Dyatlov, pitched camp on the slope of a peak the local Mansi people called Kholat Syakhl roughly translated as “Dead Mountain.” They were never seen alive again.

What the search party found

When the group missed its check-in date, a search was launched. Searchers found the tent partially collapsed and slashed open from the inside, with boots, coats, and supplies left behind as though the campers had fled into subzero temperatures without proper clothing. Footprints, some in socks or bare feet, led downhill toward a treeline more than a kilometer away.

The first two bodies were found near the remains of a small fire beneath a cedar tree, its lower branches broken as if someone had climbed it to see farther across the slope. Three more bodies were discovered between the tree and the tent, apparently having tried to return. The final four were not located until May, buried under snow in a ravine, and showed the most severe injuries: crushed ribs, a fractured skull, and one victim missing her tongue and eyes. None of the injuries were consistent with an attack by another person, according to the original 1959 investigation, which closed the case citing an unknown “compelling natural force.”

Decades of competing theories

The gap between the physical evidence and a clean explanation fueled decades of speculation a secret weapons test, infrasound-induced panic, a Mansi tribal attack, even claims of a cover-up tied to Soviet military exercises. Katabatic winds, paradoxical undressing associated with hypothermia, and animal scavenging have all been proposed as partial explanations for specific details.

In 2019, Russian authorities reopened the case, and a 2021 study led by Swiss researchers modeled a small, delayed slab avalanche combined with the specific slope geometry and a buried snowmobile-style vehicle used for shelter, arguing it could produce the blunt-force injuries without leaving an obvious avalanche scar. The theory has been influential but is not universally accepted, and the case remains, for many researchers, a rare instance where the physical evidence outpaces any single tidy narrative.

Days passed in complete silence. Finally, gripped by worry, a servant opened the door to check on him. She found Tolstoy collapsed on the floor, weeping uncontrollably. Through his tears, he looked up at her and uttered the devastating words:

It’s a powerful moment that shows just how intensely Tolstoy lived with his characters to him, Anna wasn’t just a creation on paper; her death was a genuine, heartbreaking loss.

A new study has finally analyzed the pigments behind the murals of Lassithi, and the results reveal a sophisticated, evolving craft tradition that painters carried across the region for eight hundred years.

The research, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, Reports, was led by Yiğit Zafer Helvacı together with Roberto Giustetto, Giacomo Chiari, Tiziana Cavaleri, Maurizio Aceto, Klio Zervaki of the Ephorate of Lassithi Antiquities at the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos, and Monica Gulmini. The project grew out of Helvacı’s doctoral research, a collaboration between the University of Turin, the Centro Conservazione e Restauro Venaria Reale, and Greece’s Ministry of Culture, funded through the European Union’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie program.

A region overlooked until now

Crete holds a central place in Byzantine art, yet its eastern region, Lassithi, had remained largely absent from the archaeometric record, a gap the researchers set out to close. The team examined murals from eleven churches across the area, spanning a remarkable stretch of time, from the eighth century through the sixteenth.

To identify what the painters actually used, the researchers took tiny paint samples from the church walls and analyzed them using portable X-ray fluorescence, microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, a combination capable of identifying pigments down to their mineral composition without requiring large or destructive samples.

Three reds, one shared palette

Red ochre, a natural iron-based pigment, turned out to be the most common color across nearly every church studied, appearing in a range of different shades and grain sizes depending on its source and preparation. Vermilion, a considerably more expensive pigment made from mercury sulfide, showed up far more often than the researchers had expected, used not only to render important figures but also for borders and background layers, a more generous use of an costly material than earlier assumptions about provincial Byzantine painting had suggested.

A third pigment, red lead, appeared mainly in combination with the other two, mixed with vermilion or ochre rather than applied on its own. Painters bound these pigments with lime, and many worked using the secco technique, applying paint to plaster that had already dried rather than to a wet surface. Combined with the ochre and vermilion, this approach let artists build up the traditional Byzantine three-tone shading style, layering light, medium, and dark reds to model faces, clothing, and other fine detail.

Centuries have left their own marks

The study also documented how time itself had altered the murals. In several churches, the sustained heat of candles burning near the walls had transformed yellow pigment into red in small, isolated patches, a slow chemical change wrought by centuries of flame exposure. Humidity did its own damage elsewhere, darkening areas painted with vermilion and red lead into dull gray or black patches, a reminder that these murals have been chemically active objects for far longer than they have been passive works of art.

A shared tradition across the centuries

Taken together, the findings point to painters across Lassithi drawing on a genuinely shared set of materials and techniques over hundreds of years, even as both pigment quality and the use of vermilion specifically appear to have improved after the fourteenth century. Researchers say the resulting dataset can now guide future conservation work on murals that, in many cases, already show real signs of aging from heat and humidity exposure.

With this study, Lassithi joins a still-short but growing list of Cretan regions to receive this kind of material analysis, helping to close a longstanding gap in the archaeometric understanding of Byzantine art in the island’s less-studied eastern churches.

For centuries, the Sámi people lived in harmony with the unforgiving environments of Sápmi, a vast arctic region stretching across the northern latitudes of modern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. As distinct indigenous groups with deeply rooted spiritual traditions, complex reindeer husbandry practices, and unique language groups, they possessed a rich and thriving culture. However, as the Nordic nation-states sought to consolidate their borders, centralize economic power, and establish homogeneous national identities during the 19th and 20th centuries, the Sámi became the targets of highly coordinated, aggressive state-led assimilation policies designed to erase their distinct identity.

The Weaponization of Education and Land

In Norway, this policy was formalized under the term ‘Norwegianization’ (fornorsking). Beginning in the mid-1800s and continuing deep into the 20th century, the state enacted strict legislation targeting Sámi language and land rights. The Land Act of 1902 decreed that state land could only be sold to individuals who could speak, read, and write the Norwegian language fluently, and who officially adopted a Norwegian name. This law effectively stripped many traditional Sámi herders and fishermen of their ancestral lands, turning them into tenants on the soil their ancestors had managed for millennia.

The primary battleground for cultural erasure, however, was the residential school system. Generations of Sámi children were removed from their families and placed into state-run or church-run boarding institutions. Inside these facilities, speaking Sámi languages was strictly forbidden and severely punished. Children were forced to adopt new names, wear western clothing, and abandon their traditional customs. The joik the sacred, improvisational vocal folk poetry of the Sámi was condemned as sinful and heathen, and its practice was systematically outlawed. The Pseudoscience of Superiority

In Sweden, the assimilation campaign took a pseudo-scientific turn with the establishment of the State Institute for Racial Biology in Uppsala in 1922, led by Herman Lundborg. The remarkable journey of John of Plano Carpini (Giovanni da Pian del Carpine) stands as one of the most daring diplomatic missions in medieval history. Long before Marco Polo set foot in China, this elderly Franciscan friar traveled thousands of miles into the heart of the Mongol Empire to deliver a letter to the Great Khan.

1. The Context: A Terrified Europe

In the early 1240s, the Mongol armies under Batu Khan swept through Eastern Europe, devastating Poland and Hungary. Western Europe braced for an apocalypse, but the Mongol forces suddenly withdrew in 1242. Unbeknownst to the Europeans, this retreat was triggered by the death of the Great Khan, Ögedei; the Mongol commanders needed to return to their capital, Karakorum, to elect a new leader.

Seeking to understand this terrifying new power and stop future invasions, Pope Innocent IV decided to send envoys. He chose Friar John of Plano Carpini, a companion of St. Francis of Assisi. Carpini was 63 years old an advanced age for the time”and quite corpulent, meaning he had to ride a donkey or horse across brutal terrain for months on end.

2. The Epic Journey (1245–1246)

Carpini set out from Lyon, France, on Easter Sunday in 1245. Traveling through Germany, Poland, and Kyiv, he reached the Mongol-controlled steppes of the Golden Horde by early 1246.

From the banks of the Volga River, Carpini and his companion, Friar Benedict the Pole, were forced into a relentless, high-speed ride across Asia. Utilizing the highly efficient Mongol Yam (postal relay system), they changed horses several times a day, riding up to 100 miles daily through extreme weather and starvation diets.

By July 1246, they reached the imperial camp near Karakorum, just in time for a historic event: the enthronement of Güyük Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan.

3. The Meeting with Güyük Khan

Carpini was among the first Europeans to witness the stunning grandeur of the Mongol court. He documented the assembly of thousands of ambassadors, princes, and elites gathered at the Syra Orda (the Yellow Tent).

When Carpini finally secured an audience with the newly crowned Güyük Khan, he presented Pope Innocent IV’s papal bulls. The Pope’s letters demanded that the Mongols cease attacking Christians and suggested that the Khan convert to Christianity.

The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was led by scientists at the American Museum of Natural History, together with colleagues from Florida State University, Harvard University, and the University of California, Riverside. The findings offer a rare window into just how far back in evolutionary history left-right behavioral preferences actually reach.

More than a matter of holding a pencil

Lead author Scott Evans, assistant curator of invertebrate paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History, put the discovery in accessible terms. When people talk about being right or left handed, he said, most probably think about which hand holds a pencil or which foot kicks a soccer ball. Yet the research shows that an animal with no hands and no feet at all, living more than 500 million years ago, may have had its own version of handedness all the same.

Spriggina lived during the Ediacaran Period, spanning roughly 635 to 538 million years ago, one of the most transformative stretches in the entire history of life on Earth. It was during this period that microscopic organisms first evolved into multicellular life large enough to see with the naked eye, and eventually capable of increasingly complex behavior, movement among them.

Fossils frozen mid-storm in the Australian outback

The Flinders Ranges of South Australia preserve one of the most extraordinary fossil records from this period anywhere on Earth. At Nilpena Ediacara National Park in particular, individual excavated beds capture entire communities of the Ediacara biota exactly as they were buried during ancient storm events, effectively freezing snapshots of the seafloor as it existed 550 million years ago.

Spriggina is among the most significant fossils recovered there, ranking as one of the earliest known animals with bilateral symmetry, a body plan with a distinct front and back, left and right sides, and top and bottom, the same basic organization shared by humans and the overwhelming majority of animals alive today. Spriggina holds the distinction of being the official state fossil of South Australia, and takes its name from Reg Sprigg, the geologist who first recognized the Ediacara biota in the Australian outback more than seventy-five years ago.

Twice as many fossils bent one way

To test whether Spriggina showed any real left-right preference in life, the research team examined shape variation across more than 100 exceptionally well-preserved fossils, drawn both from the beds at Nilpena and from the collections of the South Australia Museum in Adelaide.

The pattern that emerged surprised the researchers. Roughly twice as many fossil specimens appeared bent to the left as appeared bent to the right. Because these particular fossils preserve mirror-image impressions of the original living animals, that apparent leftward bend in the rock actually represents an animal that bent to the right while it was alive. The consistency of that pattern across so many individual fossils points to a genuine, population-wide behavioral preference, not simple chance variation.

What handedness might say about an ancient nervous system

Study co-author Mary Droser, a paleontologist at the University of California, Riverside, framed the discovery’s broader significance simply. It serves as a reminder, she said, that some of the traits people take for granted today have remarkably ancient origins.

The finding also offers researchers a new clue about how Spriggina may have experienced its world. As Evans explained, living animals that display this kind of handedness today, a group spanning insects, octopuses, birds, and mammals, tend to have genuinely complex sensory abilities. That comparison suggests Spriggina’s nervous system may have been considerably more sophisticated than its simple, ribbon-like body might otherwise suggest, and closer in complexity to the nervous systems of animals living today than previously assumed.

Lassie: The Unexpected Target

Perhaps the most surprising example of the Pentagon’s reach into pop culture is Lassie. People don’t think of a wholesome show about a Collie as a piece of military PR, but it highlights just how closely the Department of Defense watches everything on television.

In David Robb’s investigative book Operation Hollywood, he breaks down a specific 1961 episode titled “Timmy and the Martians”:

• The Original Plot: A military plane crashes nearby. Lassie alerts her owner, Timmy. When the military arrives and pieces the wreckage back together, they realize the crash was caused by a mechanical failure—a faulty wing design created a high-pitched vibration that only Lassie’s sensitive ears could detect before it snapped.

• The Pentagon’s Objection: The Air Force strongly objected to the idea that their aircraft had manufacturing defects or that mechanical failure caused a crash. They felt it made military technology look unreliable to the public.

• The Forced Rewrite: To keep the military’s cooperation, the writers were forced to alter the script. Instead of a mechanical defect, the crash was changed to a freak weather accident, completely absolving the Air Force and its technology of any blame.

The Hvalsey farm in Greenland’s Qaqortukulooq region is home to some of the best-preserved Norse ruins in the Eastern Settlement, offering a remarkable glimpse into the lives of Greenland’s medieval settlers.

A study published in Science Advances in 2022, still cited as the clearest answer to the question, found that the real explanation was not what most people had assumed.

Norse settlers founded the Eastern Settlement in southern Greenland around the year 985 AD. By the early fifteenth century, it had been largely abandoned. As the study’s authors note, earlier research had already suggested the departure likely stemmed from multiple compounding problems, climate change, failures of governance, economic collapse, or social stratification among them, since southern Greenland had always sat at the very margin of what could be farmed at all.

The cold explanation that made sense, until it didn’t

For years, the most widely accepted theory held that the Norse settlers simply could no longer endure the cold. This was never a knock on Viking toughness. The world genuinely had grown colder, since the planet was entering the period now known as the Little Ice Age, and the shift was no small matter of thicker coats or an extra log on the fire. A roughly two-degree Celsius drop in temperature triggered serious disruption on a global scale. Rivers and coastal seas froze over, bringing trade and communication to a standstill, while torrential rains ruined harvests and killed off crops and livestock, producing widespread famine and hardship.

Greenland is not exactly known for blistering summers even today, so it made intuitive sense that the Little Ice Age would have been what finally ended farming on this already inhospitable, ice-bound land. Geological evidence, including ice core records used to reconstruct centuries of temperature change across Greenland, seemed to back the theory up. It looked like an open-and-shut case.

There was just one problem. As study co-author Raymond Bradley explained, no data existed from the actual location of the Norse settlements themselves before this research, and that gap in the evidence was a real problem. The existing ice core evidence did show Greenland turning too cold for agriculture during the Little Ice Age, but it came from a region many thousands of kilometers away from where the Vikings had actually settled. Bradley and his colleagues wanted to examine how the climate had changed specifically near the Norse farms themselves.

The real culprit was not temperature

That is where the surprises began. No suitable ice core existed near the original Norse settlement sites, but the team found something nearly as good, a small, unassumingly named body of water called Lake 578, sitting just nine kilometers from the tiny village of Qassiarsuk. Today Qassiarsuk is genuinely tiny, with a population of just 39 people as of 2020. A thousand years ago, however, this same spot was known as Brattahlíð, home to the Viking explorer Erik the Red and to some of the largest farms in all of Norse Greenland, making it the ideal place to study exactly how conditions changed for the Norse settlers, and perhaps finally explain why they left.

Nobody had ever studied this particular location before, said Boyang Zhao, the study’s lead author, who carried out the research for his doctoral degree in geosciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Zhao and his colleagues spent three years collecting sediment samples from the lake, aiming to reconstruct roughly 2,000 years of local temperature and water availability using chemical markers preserved in the layered sediment.

What we discovered, Zhao said, is that while temperature barely changed at all throughout the entire period of Norse settlement in southern Greenland, the region grew steadily and increasingly dry over time.

That growing dryness would have been devastating for Greenland’s Vikings, since farming there was extraordinarily difficult even in good years. During the winter months, cattle and some sheep and goats had to be kept in dark barns, and by the time spring finally arrived, many cattle were too weak to walk on their own, forcing Norse farmers to physically carry the animals out to pasture.

Under drought conditions, this already precarious system collapsed outright. Less rainfall meant lower crop yields, which in turn meant farmers could no longer feed their livestock through the winter months at all.

The end of a culture

Some turned to the sea for food, hunting marine mammals in place of the livestock they could no longer raise on land. But that was a far riskier undertaking than farming had ever been, and there was never any guarantee that a hunt would actually succeed. As food grew increasingly scarce and unreliable, expanding sea ice simultaneously threatened to cut the settlers off entirely from mainland Europe. According to the study, these combined pressures made the eventual fate of Norse Greenland close to inevitable.

Unable to adapt to an increasingly dry environment, the settlers faced growing social instability, and eventually abandoned their homes altogether, migrating toward regions that were not necessarily warmer, but were at least wetter.

The research closes with a carefully qualified conclusion. The reasons behind the abandonment of the Norse settlements are complex, the authors write, and it would be wrong to attribute it to climate change alone. Even so, their results clearly show that shifts in hydroclimate were closely tied to the fate of the Eastern Settlement.

In the late autumn of 1932, the fertile black soil of Ukraine a landscape historically celebrated as the ‘breadbasket of Europe’ became the setting for one of the most calculated acts of state-sponsored devastation in human history. Under the absolute authority of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet regime engineered a man-made famine known today as the Holodomor (derived from the Ukrainian words for ‘to kill by starvation’). This catastrophe was not born of drought, crop disease, or natural atmospheric failure. It was a cold, deliberate administrative exercise in structural destruction, designed specifically to break the backbone of Ukrainian nationalism, eliminate the independent peasantry (’kulaks’), and force the remaining population into total submission to centralized collective state farms.

The Legal Framework of Hunger

The tragedy accelerated rapidly following the introduction of impossibly high grain requisition quotas imposed by Moscow. When individual villages naturally failed to meet these unrealistic targets, the state did not offer relief; instead, it enacted the brutal ‘Law of Five Ears of Grain’ on August 7, 1932. Under this decree, anyone including starving children caught gathering leftover stalks of wheat from harvested state fields could be executed on the spot or sentenced to ten years in forced labor camps. To ensure absolute compliance, the Soviet state deployed specialized activist brigades. These urban communist squads systematically swept through rural villages, utilizing iron rods to probe the earth, walls, and chimneys for hidden jars of grain or flour. They did not just confiscate agricultural surpluses; they stripped households of vegetables, livestock, and any edible material, leaving communities completely devoid of sustenance.

Simultaneously, the regime implemented a highly restrictive internal passport system. This effectively cordoned off the Ukrainian border, preventing starving peasants from fleeing to neighboring regions or urban centers in search of bread. Villages that failed to meet their quotas were placed on ‘blacklists.’ This status suspended all local commerce, prohibited the import of manufactured goods, and blocked any external food supply from entering. Trapped within their own borders, millions of people were forced to consume grass, tree bark, and domestic animals as the social fabric completely unraveled under the weight of desperate survival.

The Global Cover-Up and Media Gaslighting

As the death toll climbed into the millions, the Soviet state maintained an ironclad international blackout. Foreign journalists were strictly banned from traveling to the affected rural areas, and official documentation was systematically altered. In Moscow, Western reporters who wished to maintain their credentials actively self-censored. Most notoriously, Walter Duranty, the Moscow Bureau Chief for The New York Times, actively dismissed reports of famine, famously writing that ‘any report of a famine in Russia is today an exaggeration or malignant propaganda.’ Duranty’s highly deceptive reporting earned him a Pulitzer Prize, while independent journalists like Gareth Jones, who risked their lives to slip into Ukraine and expose the truth, were publicly discredited and marginalized.

The true scale of the Holodomor remained hidden for decades. Census data from 1937 that revealed a massive, unexplainable population deficit was suppressed by the regime, and the demographers who compiled it were executed. Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent opening of secret state archives did the true structural horror come fully to light, cementing the Holodomor as a stark historical warning of how totalitarian governance can manipulate basic human needs into an absolute weapon of mass destruction.

A new doctoral study from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel shows that when this partnership comes under the stress of metal pollution, the fungi involved don’t just struggle silently. They appear to communicate the danger through their own underground network, sending signals to parts of the fungus that never touched the contaminant at all.

The research is the doctoral thesis of Maarten Ottaway, supervised by Professor Joske Ruytinx at VUB, and was announced by the university on July 7, 2026.

An ancient partnership under new pressure

Most trees across the northern hemisphere depend on what are known as ectomycorrhizal fungi, organisms that form extensive networks around and between tree roots. In exchange for sugars from their host tree, these fungi help the tree draw up water and nutrients from the soil, an arrangement essential to forest health. That partnership, Ottaway’s research shows, is increasingly strained by human pollution, metal contamination among the most pervasive threats.

To study how the relationship holds up under that pressure, Ottaway focused on a single, well-studied pairing, the fungus Laccaria bicolor and poplar trees, and exposed the system to zinc and cadmium, two metals commonly found in contaminated soils. As Ottaway put it, metal pollution causes stress in both plants and fungi, and the goal of the work was to understand what actually happens to their partnership once metals like these enter the picture.

Two metals, two very different effects

The results were not what a simple model of toxicity would predict. Zinc suppressed the collaboration between tree and fungus, reducing growth on both sides of the partnership. Cadmium, despite being the more notoriously toxic of the two metals in most contexts, appeared instead to stimulate the interaction. Not all metals affect the symbiosis in the same way, Ottaway noted, and the underlying response turned out to be considerably more complex than the research team had initially expected.

A stress signal that travels

In the second strand of his research, Ottaway turned to the molecular mechanisms the fungus uses to sense stress and adjust its growth accordingly. He found that exposing the fungal network to cadmium sent a stress signal through the mycelium that reached even parts of the fungus with no direct contact with the metal at all. That finding points to something genuinely unexpected, an internal communication system operating within the fungus itself. As Ottaway explained, fungi appear capable of transmitting stress signals across far greater distances than researchers have previously been able to demonstrate.

Alongside that discovery, Ottaway identified a specific protein believed to be involved in these stress responses, one that behaves differently from comparable proteins already described in yeasts and disease-causing fungi. The finding marks an early step toward untangling the distinctive biology of ectomycorrhizal fungi more broadly, a group whose molecular stress responses remain far less understood than those of their pathogenic relatives.

Why the underground matters above ground

For Ottaway, the value of the work extends well past the laboratory bench. Forests play a crucial role in biodiversity, climate regulation, and carbon storage, he said, and protecting these ecosystems depends on understanding how trees and fungi respond together to pollution and other stresses, not simply how each organism copes on its own.

The doctoral thesis, titled “Impact of Trace Metals on Ectomycorrhizal Symbiosis With an Emphasis on the Role of Cellular Redox Regulation,” builds on Ottaway’s earlier peer-reviewed work with Ruytinx’s group, published in Frontiers in Plant Science, which showed that the Laccaria bicolor and poplar symbiosis persists even under excess zinc, though at the cost of reduced growth in both partners. Taken together, the research paints a picture of a partnership that is neither simply broken nor simply resilient under pollution, but one that responds to different threats in distinct, and only partly understood, ways.

The Minds of War: Inside the US Military’s Psychic Spy Program

To look back at the Cold War is to look at an era defined by existential desperation. By the early 1970s, the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a stalemate where any perceived advantage no matter how bizarre could turn the tide. It was in this hyper-paranoid landscape that the US government embarked on one of its most unconventional intelligence experiments: a 20-year, multi-million dollar program to weaponize the human mind.

Known by its final codename, Project Stargate, the initiative sought to determine whether “remote viewing” the alleged ability to mentally perceive distant, hidden locations could be used for actionable military espionage.

The Cold War Catalyst

The genesis of America’s psychic spy program lay not in a sudden faith in the occult, but in deep-seated intelligence anxieties. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, declassified rumors and intelligence briefings suggested that the Soviet Union was pouring massive funding into “psychotronics” (the Soviet term for parapsychology) and mind-control research.

Fearing a “psychic gap” that could leave the nation defenseless against invisible Soviet mind-spies, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and later the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) felt compelled to act. If the Soviets were exploring the boundaries of the human mind, the United States could not afford to lag behind.

SRI and the Birth of “Remote Viewing”

To ground these fringe ideas in scientific methodology, the government partnered with physicists Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park, California.

The researchers coined the term “remote viewing” to distance their work from the sensationalism of stage magic and spiritualist “clairvoyance.” Under rigorous laboratory constraints, they recruited individuals who claimed to possess high psychic aptitude most notably a former police commissioner named Pat Price and an artist named Ingo Swann.

The protocols were strictly standardized:

• A viewer would sit in a sensory-deprived, shielded room.

• They would be given a set of geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) or a sealed envelope containing a target description.

• Without leaving the room, the viewer would enter a relaxed state and attempt to sketch or describe the physical structures, terrain, or activities at those distant coordinates.

To the astonishment of project handlers, some early trials yielded uncanny results. Ingo Swann, for instance, successfully described a hidden, highly secure Soviet facility, sketching structures that closely matched subsequent satellite photography.

Under the Military Umbrella

As the program evolved through the 1980s, management shifted primarily to the Defense Intelligence Agency, operating under a rotating series of codenames including GONDOLA WISH, GRILL FLAME, SUN STREAK, and finally, STARGATE.

Base operations were quietly established at Fort Meade, Maryland. Here, a small, tightly knit unit of military personnel was trained in Swann’s remote viewing methodologies. These psychic soldiers were tasked with real-world intelligence missions: locating downed Soviet aircraft, tracking hostages held in the Middle East, and peering inside locked hangars at Soviet submarine bases.

Among the unit’s most famous claims was the tracking of Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev’s health, and providing descriptions of a massive, top-secret Soviet submarine class before Western satellites could confirm its existence.

The Fatal Flaw: Inconsistency

Despite occasional, jaw-dropping successes, Project Stargate was plagued by a fundamental flaw that ultimately sealed its fate: unreliability.

For every accurate sketch a remote viewer produced, there were dozens of completely inaccurate, vague, or misleading descriptions. In the world of military intelligence, where lives depend on precise data, “sometimes accurate” is highly dangerous. Analysts could never determine which psychic impressions were accurate insights and which were simply mental noise or “imagination.”

By the early 1990s, the Cold War was over, the Soviet Union had collapsed, and the existential threat that birthed the program had vanished. Congress directed that management of the project be transferred back to the CIA, which commissioned an independent scientific review to evaluate Stargate’s utility.

Closing the Stargate

In 1995, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) released its final evaluation. Compiled by staticians and psychologists, including noted skeptic Ray Hyman and parapsychologist Jessica Utts, the report concluded that while some statistically significant anomalies occurred in laboratory settings, remote viewing remained far too inconsistent to be used in military operations.

The report stated:

“Advance intelligence operations cannot be based on a phenomenon where the hit rate is uncertain, and the information lacks the specific details required for military targeting.”

In late 1995, Project Stargate was officially terminated, and its archives were declassified. Over twenty years, the government had spent roughly $20 million.

Ultimately, Project Stargate remains a fascinating historical artifact a testament to a time when the stakes of the Cold War were so unimaginably high that the world’s most sophisticated military forces were willing to peer into the supernatural in search of an edge.
