180 Million Years Under a Reservoir

The Rutland Sea Dragon

In February 2021, a conservation worker draining a lagoon in England spotted something odd sticking out of the mud.

It turned out to be the largest and most complete ichthyosaur skeleton ever found in the UK, over 10 meters long and roughly 180 million years old.

Dr Dean Lomax of the University of Manchester, who led the excavation, called it one of the greatest finds in British palaeontological history.

A reservoir in England’s smallest county turned out to be sitting on top of a Jurassic sea giant.
